A look at OCTA's preliminary options for cutting bus service in March 2010

In case you haven't seen it, OCTA is presenting 4 different options for cutting bus service in March 2010:

  • A: Preserve service on core routes
  • B: Make Proportional Reductions
  • C: Modify days or hours of service
  • D: Cut more weekend service and restructure routes

All of these cut Night Owl service. I've basically cut and pasted information from OCTA's materials. Pick your poison, and comment away below.

A) Preserve core service

This means the most heavily-used lines will be kept in service. Ironically, OCTA is keeping its underperforming express routes because they keep saying it's "funded by a different source of money." These lines carry 82% of rides taken on OCTA and, because it will take away geographic coverage, it will severely scale back ACCESS paratransit services for seniors and the disabled.

B) Make Proportional Reductions

This option spreads the cuts system-wide, but maintains the current geographic network. This has the least likely impact on ACCESS paratransit services.

D) Combined strategy

Similar to strategy C, but with more focus on cutting the weekends, with some routes scratched and funneled into new routes. This, according to OCTA, would have some potentially moderate ACCESS impacts.

Option A, but keep Night Owl

Bill Cousert's picture

Option A, but keep Night Owl even if it means cutting back elsewhere. At the very least, operate Night Owl service once every two hours. If necessary, charge extra.

Option A will probably not happen.

Steven's picture

Option A seems like the best bean-counter idea for those concerned with ridership numbers, but we're already hearing bloody hell being raised by disabled community members in South County and similar concerns from seniors whose ACCESS service would be slashed.

All Options Involve the Cancellation of Route 24!

Simon Oh's picture

As a Cal State Fullerton student, I know first-hand that such a cancellation will be the biggest mistake OCTA can ever make for the students, faculty, staff, and visitors that rely on bus service to and from CSUF. Although CSUF is serviced by 5 total routes--24, 26, 53, 57 (the only Night Owl line here) and 213--even one service reduction or cancellation can have a catastrophic impact here. Also, it seems like from the service reduction proposals set forth by OCTA, they cite 24 as one of least used bus routes. Absolutely not true!!! The buses on this line are often packed with students from Fullerton College, CSUF, Troy High School and other schools along its route during weekday rush hours, particularly during afternoon rush hours where there are standing-room only buses. I don't know if OCTA is receiving their ridership numbers correctly from the data tabulated by the drivers every time a passenger gets on but either way, they are DEAD WRONG on the 24 and any and all bus service around this part of town should be preserved. If they really are concerned about addressing their budget shortfall, they should just simply reduce the frequencies between buses on the lines and not cancel them...and maybe they should also consider raising the fare prices to $2, make express line fares $5, and raise fare prices as well. They should really consider those options if they really want to get more revenues flowing in and preserve the existing bus service.

Hi Simon, OCTA's Board of

Steven's picture

Hi Simon,

OCTA's Board of Directors already considered another fare increase to up to $2.00/ride, but decided not to proceed with it.

As to the cancellation of the 24, thanks for mentioning it. I haven't seen any Cal State Fullerton students at any of the hearings/meetings; perhaps you could ask other CSUF students to show up at the Public Hearing this October 26th? That's when our county's politicians get together to decide how to cut your bus service.

RE: Route 24

Simon Oh's picture

I'm surprised no one from CSUF is showing up but I definitely will as planned to the public hearing at the end of the month to let them know this is not going to happen ever!

Well, if you go to CSUF and

Spokker's picture

Well, if you go to CSUF and are a financial aid student you have no time for anything because you have to keep working since the state is holding your grants hostage. At least that's the situation I'm in.

I just want my government entitlement payout. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie.
