Good News & Bad News

Recent OCTA vote saves a little more bus service than we thought.
Thanks to you — the dedicated bus riders and activists — who showed up for yet another OCTA board meeting despite the frustration of having your public comment time reduced again to "only" 2 minutes each! Although the situation is still dire, every time we show up we make a little more progress (the following all take place in March):

  • Route 24 will not be eliminated, although it will be cut to hourly service, and run weekdays only
  • The newly restructured Route 29 northern terminus will be La Habra Blvd. instead of just the Buena Park Metrolink
  • The newly restructured Route 59 northern terminus will be Miller/Miraloma near La Palma instead of the Orange Transportation Center
  • One night owl run will remain on all current night owl routes with the 43, 50 and 60 starting after approximately 12:30am and the 57 after 12:13
  • They promise us there will be no span cuts (first and last buses of the day).
Also, the board directed OCTA staff to continue discussions with us on our remaining points:
  • The newly restructured 57 should go at least to CSU Fullerton
  • Routes 76 and 172 should not both be cut on weekends
  • Route 82 should be retained on Sundays at least in central Rancho Santa Margarita
  • Etc., etc. (see our letter to OCTA on www.transitrideroc.com/node/307)
We'll let you know the outcome as soon as we can.

The bad news is that we weren't able to save more service, and that if state transit funds don't materialize, there may be double or more the cuts that are happening in March.

OCTA's cuts PowerPoint is at www.octa.net/pdf/agenda112309item3.pdf; and their spreadsheet with full details is at www.transitrideroc.com/sites/default/files/images-march2010/March 2010 Service Change Staff Recommendations.xls.

Another chance for bus funding — this Friday
The State Assembly Transportation Committee will be holding informational hearings this Friday morning, December 4, at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority offices for the purpose of exploring the current status of transit in California. We may send a delegation once we learn the value / purpose of these hearings. Please let us know if you are interested in attending. We will get back with you when we know more.

I'm thinking about getting a moped. Total cost, under $500 and they get over 100 MPG. No license or insurance required. Seems like a great way to survive the upcoming transit drought.
