Spread the word about the March 2010 cuts

We are asking everyone to let your fellow bus riders know about the changes. Talk to the people waiting with you at the bus stops, and on the bus. If you have time to do more, you can spend a few hours riding lines back and forth making announcements, or talking to riders at busy stops.

The days we most need your help are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but you can start right away. Here are the bus cut “hot” routes:

21, 24, 29, 43, 47, 53, 59, 62, 70, 74, 75, 76, 86, 131, 147, 164, 172, 193, 693

Please tell us what routes or intersections you can cover. We'll coordinate everybody to cover routes. (Before Sunday, the best areas on the restructured routes are on the sections being chopped.)

The best tool is to pick up the Bus Service Change brochures on the buses and hand them out. Let people know that if they see their route listed on p. 2 or on the Bus Book cover, they should definitely check carefully because there are major cuts, including route eliminations, some new 90 minute frequencies, and a lot of routes will be very crowded. Focus on are the route eliminations (p. 2 of brochure) and the route restructuring (p. 21, map p. 23).

You can hand out Bus Books, too, but the brochure is the best to explain what’s being cut.

If they run out of the brochures, just keep one copy to show to people (or use this cheat sheet on the right) and tell them they can get the brochures on other buses or go online at octa.net

If people ask who you are, tell them you’re not OCTA, that there is a bus riders’ group called Transit Advocates, and if they like, they can sign up for our latest announcements by e-mail or phone # (you can print a sign-up sheet here, or just use blank paper). This really helps grow our group, and you can use it to get back to people with questions, too.

Here are a few lines in Spanish – you can try saying them or just print them and show them to people:

  • Empezando domingo, el catorce, muchas rutas del bús serán eliminadas y muchas rutas cambiarán bastante.
Beginning Sunday the 14, a lot of bus routes will be eliminated and many routes will change substantially.
  • Para aprender los recortes, consulte los folletos “Bus Service Change” en los buses y en octa.net.
To learn about the cuts, check the “Bus Service Change” brochures on the buses and at octa.net
  • (Soy parte de un grupo de pasajeros del bus, no la OCTA.)
(I am with a group of bus riders, not OCTA.)
  • (Disculpe, no hablo mucho español.)
(Sorry, I don’t speak much Spanish.)

Thanks for helping! You’ll be surprised at how many people don’t know about the magnitude of the cuts! Most people are stunned, but extremely grateful to hear about the cuts ahead of time. Let people know they can help other riders, and let us know if you have any questions.
